Does a Chinese trademark registration also protect my brand in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan?

No. This is the single most common and most expensive misunderstanding among companies entering Greater China.

A registration granted by CNIPA covers mainland China only. Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan each operate separate trademark systems with their own registers and their own examination practice. China's accession to the Madrid Protocol does not extend to Hong Kong or Macau, and Taiwan is outside the Madrid system altogether — so a Madrid registration designating China will not reach any of the three. Each requires its own separate local filing .

The practical consequence is that a brand can be fully registered in the mainland and still be available for a squatter to take in Hong Kong or Taiwan, where first-to-file also governs.

Chang Tsi & Partners maintains its own offices in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, so all four Greater China applications can be filed and prosecuted without appointing outside agents.
