Chang Tsi & Partners, invited by the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) and the UCIPF, successfully hosted an international webinar titled “Protecting Product Designs in China: Secure Your Innovations Across All IP Frameworks.” The event drew strong participation from corporate representatives, IP professionals, and in-house counsel worldwide, reflecting the growing global interest in design patent protection in China.

The webinar was led by Spring Chang, Founding Partner and Managing Partner of Chang Tsi & Partners, together with Bing Xiao, head of the firm’s Design Patent Team.

Spring Chang opened the session by providing a comprehensive overview of China’s evolving design patent system, highlighting the rapid increase in filings and the closer alignment with international standards following recent amendments to the Patent Law. She shared key data-driven insights and emphasized the importance of building robust design portfolios to strengthen brand value and market position.

Bing Xiao delivered an in-depth comparative analysis of design protection in China，the United States, and EU, outlining differences in scope of protection, examination standards, filing strategy and remedy mechanisms. He underscored the need for multinational companies to adapt their IP strategies to local practices while pursuing global harmonization.

It was noted that design innovation will become increasingly crucial in the globalization, digital economy and AI-driven industries. The webinar highlighted that China’s design patent regime is expected to undergo further refinements to align with global practices, while the use of digital tools and AI-powered analytics will enhance efficiency in design patent examination, prosecution, as well as enforcement.
